PDF invoice and electronic invoice: understand the difference

A readable document and an exchange of structured data do not meet the same need. The right benchmarks to prepare your organization.

PDFs are useful, but they do not tell the whole story

A PDF invoice is convenient to read, print and share. It presents the contact details, line items, taxes and total. The recipient may nevertheless have to re-enter that information to use it in another system.

Structured exchange organises data so that software can interpret it. This describes a technical process; mandatory formats, transmission methods and other arrangements in Morocco must be established from applicable Moroccan legislation and instructions.

Distinguish three layers

Presentation helps a person understand an invoice. Data allows two systems to recognise the customer, amounts and taxes. Exchange defines how the document moves between systems and how its processing is confirmed.

A PDF, a structured file and an acknowledgement of receipt are therefore not interchangeable. Adding a QR code does not, on its own, demonstrate that an authority has validated a document.

What about Morocco?

Article 145-IX of the CGI 2026 provides for certain taxpayer categories to use a computerised invoicing system meeting administrative technical criteria; it leaves implementing arrangements to sector regulations. Check the legislation and instructions applicable to your activity rather than importing another country’s timetable.

What can you do today?

Start by making your customer records and identifiers reliable. Decide who creates, checks and issues invoices. Avoid silent changes to finalised documents and retain an identifiable version of documents you send.

Test exports too: seeing a total in an interface does not prove that your data will be easy to retrieve later.

What Factino currently provides

Factino lets you prepare quotes, issue PDF invoices, retain the version issued and track payments. Generic UBL 2.1 export is available for issued invoices and credit notes, with OASIS XML schema validation and preservation of archived amounts. Transmission to DGI is not activated. A valid UBL schema does not establish acceptance by DGI or by every receiving application.

Sources and scope of this review

Check Moroccan legislation and its implementing provisions with DGI and in the Official Bulletin. Announcements or specifications from another country do not establish an obligation in Morocco. This editorial review, dated 31 October 2026, is neither an exhaustive inventory of recent publications nor a statement that Factino complies with every applicable requirement.
